What an exciting and momentous week! The MLK, Jr. Birthday holiday on Monday gave us all reason to pause and remember an individual with a legitimate case to be considered among the greatest Americans in history. His life and works, along with the triumph and continuing struggle of a people, continues to inspire and challenge the rest of us to work for justice. Then on Tuesday, the nation watched as a new leader was inaugurated, a new government peacefully installed, and a new chapter in American history began to unfold. I wasn’t lucky enough to join the millions of our fellow countrymen and women on the National Mall to witness the event firsthand, but it looked pretty good on TV, too. Certainly warmer, anyway!
This week has been full of sources of inspiration and genuine optimism for the future despite headlines. Yet to me, it all pales in comparison to news that I am happy to share with you about some upcoming changes in my life. Thanks to God’s grace, in the upcoming months my wife and I are expecting to welcome our first child. We’ve declined to find out the gender, preferring to be surprised, but so far everything has been normal and uneventful, which is a blessing for sure. So we’ve been readying our home, picking out neutral colors for paint and little clothes, and generally girding ourselves for the change to come. Such an incredibly exciting time!
This week makes me realize that for all of us, there truly is much to be thankful for: for those blessings past that brought us this far, for those currently unfolding before our eyes, and for those we can only now imagine.
