The madness has arrived! The field of sixty four is set and sports junkies are making their pilgrimage to local sports bars and other TV outlets to drink in all that the NCAA tournament offers. You know this spectacle transcends the realm of sports when even non-fans find themselves wrapped up in their office pools and the excitement of the “Big Dance.” Best wishes to the Spartans of Michigan State and the Grizzlies of Oakland. We hope to see them both play for the next several weekends.
On the legislative court, the Governor’s proposal for a retirement incentive for public employees including teachers is heating up. Bills have been introduced that encapsulate her idea, basically a small pension multiplier “carrot” for eligible employees along with a “stick” to penalize those who refuse to take the offer. This is coupled with a series of reforms which would have public employees bearing more of the costs of their retirement. My phones and email have been blowing up over this proposal as the House began to hold hearings. I think there is the will to take action on this though I would hope we would move carefully and deliberately and not act rashly to further undermine the stability of the state retirement system. More on this as it continues to unfold.
