Michigan’s about to get healthier.
In about three weeks, workplaces across Michigan are going to go smoke-free. Many establishments across the state have already done so in advance of Michigan’s new smoke-free law going into effect on May 1. With such a big change in the works, I thought now would be a good time to give everyone a little more information about what’s in store.
The Michigan Department of Community Health has put together a very helpful website to answer questions that consumers and business owners have about the ban. You can check it out at www.michigan.gov/smokefreelaw. The website contains the actual bill’s language, answers to frequently asked questions, and a guide for businesses to make sure they are in compliance with the new law.
During my three terms in the Michigan House, I heard about this proposal from an awful lot of constituents. The majority of them were in support of this change and I shared their belief when I voted for the ban last year. I am excited that Michigan is finally joining the large majority of other states with some sort of smoke-free law that will protect employees and consumers.
